There are 12 months in the Islamic calender too. Ramadan is the 9th month in the Islamic Calender. The Islamic Calender is according to the moon. When there is a new moon after 29 or 30 days that means a new month has started. So each year Ramadan starts at a different time of year. And ends after 29 or 30 days according to the moon. A new year starts after Hajj (the Holy Pilgrimage to Makkah) which is the last month. Hope it answers your question.

Ramadan began on 9/23 and will end on 10/22 for most of the USA. The timing depends on when the new moon is sighted.
