Ever see a pile of kittens? Cats sleep with their pride (as in a pride of lions). You are their pride. And you are warm and cuddly. My cat has to have a paw on each of us. Don't you just love them.
What gets me is how many of us will spend the night in total discomfort rather than allow the wee beastie a moment's discomfort by shooing it off or moving into a more comfortable position and risk it's leaving.

Because the cat loves you both, and because this is the most comfortable place for the cat.
