When you get in a car free, its not going up or down, but its also a lift!

It is called a lift because it was used in buildings .So instead of climbing you were lifted to the top floor. And most be walked down.
So it is understood that was goes up ,eventurally comes down.

Most people who enter a tall building do so from the main lobby on the first floor. The "lift" takes them "up" to their destination. The few people who enter by helicopter from the roof usually can be ignored (even though they likely own the building?). Majority rules.

The main purpose why it was invented was to lift people or things from lower level to higher levels. But to use it again at the lower level, it has to go down. As it is going down, we just jump into it.
