1500

Unicellular organisms reproduce by mitosis- cell division into a mother and daughter cell. If the process takes 6 hours, it takes six hours. So in 9 hours, you will still only have 1000 organisms, as it will be an additional 3 hours before the mitosis is complete and the population again doubles.
The trick in this question involves knowledge of the unicellular organism, rather than a mathematical formula.

The population is growing at a rate of 12% an hour using the rule of 72. With this in mind the number would be 1404.908 or more likely 1405.

Here is the formula:

Rate of Return
When we know the Present Value (amount today), Future Value (amount to which the investment will grow), and Number of Periods, we can calculate the rate of return with this formula:

i = ( FV / PV) (1/n) -1

In the table above we said that the Present Value is $10,000, the Future Value is $299,599.22, and there are 30 periods. Confirm that the annual compound interest rate is 12%.

FV = 299,599.22
PV = 10,000
n = 30

i = (299,599.22 / 10,000) 1/30 - 1 = 29.959922 .0333 - 1 = .12

1414 (to the nearest whole number)

Your given values are:
Initial number = 500
Doubling time = 6

The amount of organisms at any time,t can be taken to be
500 * 2^(t/6)
500 times 2 to the power of (t divided by 6)

Subbing t = 9,
Number of organisms = 500 * 2^(9/6) =1414.214 = 1414 (nearest whole number)

Further explanation:
This is because (t/6) gives you the number of doubling times there are.

This can be verified subbing t =6 , 12, 18 into the formula
where you would expect:
at t=6, organisms = 1000
at t = 12 organisms = 2000
t = 18, organisms = 4000
etc.

1500 is a common mistake as people tend to assume that the division of the organism follow a linear pattern in between intervals of 6, 12, 18, etc, while the data indicates that it does not (it follows a doubling time)

Using the rate or proportion.....

500 x 2
------------- = ------------
6 hrs ...........9hrs

= 1000 x 9

= 9000 / 6

= 1500 unicellular organisms in 9 hrs.

here is the way you can solve it

in 6 hours you get 1000 organism thingies
9 hrs is 1,5*6 hrs, so in 6 hrs you get 1,5*1000=1500 organism thingies

(changed)

answer: 1000

As it doubles only every six hours,
9/6 = 2 and a quarter
So 2*500 = 1000
