Keeping clean your spot is very important, regularly clean behind and under furniture as well and use bio-insecticides at dark spots.
Control your food storing (Cookies, bread, flakes etc. and do use broken packs quickly and dispose of overdated stuff).
Cocroaches flee the light. Regularly rerange, clean and ventilate the insides of furniture and storing rooms and bins as well.
If the house is old, has old wings or is built wall to wall with an old neighbouring house, you may need help of experts. In cities, the cocroaches can also migrate from neighbourhood, sometimes by the sewage systems or the electricity tubs. Such is certainly a case for construction hygienity experts.

Of course you know to keep the house clean, store food properly, and keep sinks dry, so we'll get onto how to kill them. Fog or bomb the entire house (making sure the windows are all closed), maybe even use extra foggers, then do it again in a couple of days, then repeat in a couple of weeks. Roaches will hide in cookbooks, foil/plastic wrap, etc...toss them and wait until you've conquered the problem before restocking. Maybe get rid of all paper products (cereal boxes, hamburger helper, cake mixes, etc) and wait before getting more. This may sound expensive, but if you REALLY want to get rid of the problem, get rid of the hiding places. Boric acid is also great, mix with flour, sugar, oil, and diced onion. Mix and shape into balls. Place in plastic baggies to help prolong the efficiency and put throughout the house. When the problem is taken care of, clean everything really well. You might also want to have an exterminator come out every several months or so to make sure you don't end up with them again. Also, check with neighbors and find out when the spray for roaches...if you get yours done, yours goes to their house and vice versus, so plan on having exterminator come the same day or so. Hope this helps....lesson learned living all my life in the deep south! Moving to the north was a blessing...NO ROACHES!!!!!!!!!

I live in Spain and they are huge here! Keeping your house clean (as someone else suggested) will not necessarily stop them. Fumigation (if there are many) is one way. A good strong insect spray (if the odd one) but if you are plagued with many then I suggest speaking to your local authority. You have my sympathy I hate the things!!

get Boric acid frm sports shot (this is powder used for playing carom) mix this powder with milk powder (50-50), add some sugar and water, make small balls from this mixture and keep at different places in house. this should not be reachable to children. Wait for 15-30 days, you will be relieved for another six months. In my knowledge this is most effective way.

If you live near a Walmart they have the boric acid powder in the pesticide for homes section as well...I use to live in Arkansas and roaches were an almost fact of life there. The Boric acid will kill them but won't be harmful to your home or pets.

You will need to contact a pest controller. If you are living in the UK, telephone the environment heath officer at your local council offices.
