Greek: 'demos' - people, 'graphein' - to write or draw. Hence 'writing or drawing [maps] about people'

'demos' also comes in words like 'democracy', 'pandemic', epidemic'

(In reply to the answer above, 'demon' is from G. 'daimonos' and came to us through Latin. It used to be spelt 'daemon'.

from L. dæmon "spirit," from Gk. daimon (gen. daimonos) "lesser god, guiding spirit, tutelary deity," (sometimes including souls of the dead), used (with daimonion) in Christian Gk. translations and Vulgate for "god of the heathen" and "unclean spirit.")

The suffix '-graphy' means 'writing about' or 'drawing' as in making diagrams or maps. The study of something (per se) would have the termination '-ology' from G. 'logos' - word (thoughts are expressed in words, perhaps?). Interesting that St John's gospel starts with the passage 'In the beginning was the Word ...', the greek word for that being 'logos'. If you think of it with the meaning of 'intelligence', 'knowledge' or something like that, it makes rather more sense.
