It does sound puzzling at first, but how much does one have to think until one realizes that both chicken and egg must necessarily have come from something that is neither a chicken nor an egg? This answer was knowable centuries before biology came about, yet people assumed there was some unsolvable mystery behind the issue.

The modern chicken is generally believed to be a descendant of "Archaeopteryx", the oldest known bird. This 150 million year old resident of the Jurassic period laid eggs, and at some point of time, evolved into an animal that was one generation away from being a proper chicken.

"The egg came first.

DNA mutations occur in the early stages of life of organisms. As you know, when new cells divide, the DNA within the nucleus separates nucleotides and duplicates, then two new helix are formed. The amino acids responsible for mitosis are prone to make mistakes to the genetic architecture-- a beautiful system of flaws that cause evolution and diversity in species. It's like the reason why children will look like their parents, but not approximately, they are a combination of both parent's ancestor genetic history and the result of new combinations in the DNA helix.

So according to fossil research, before the chicken was the "proto-chicken" and this bird was almost chicken, but not quite. Well this proto-chicken laid an egg with a mutation, and the interior change of the DNA was enough that the exterior of the new bird could be thought of as a new species.

With the current chicken and egg cycle, the egg came before the chicken because the protein in the chickens ovaries are required to form the egg but the chicken is further along in the development process so should logical come first.

There are three possible for this problem:

1. The chicken and the egg cycle has always existed so neither came first.
2. The egg came before the chicken but changes over time allowed different conditions to exist.
3. The chicken (or possibly the egg) came first and the cycle was abnormally started at some point in time.

The answer depends on what you assume about a starting point and preconditions.

A chicken and an egg are lying in bed.

The chicken is leaning against the headboard smoking a cigarette
with a satisfied smile on his face.

The egg, looking a little peeved off, grabs the quilt rolls over
and says:

"well we finally answered THAT question!"

If the egg referred to is any egg from any species and hens are defined as a bird with feathers, then eggs came before feathers. However, there has been a recent discovery of a dinasour having down on its body, indicating that feathers were an evolutionary aid to keeping the body warm and flight developed after feathers came into existence.

The chicken has to be ther to lay the egg so the chicken came first.

Otherwise how would the egg shape and shell have been formed?

obviously the egg, as chickens evolved over thousands of years from previous species along an evoluntionary chain, that extends back to the Jurasic period nearly 50 million years ago. The modern "chicken" is actually a South-East Asian species that evolved around 4000 years ago into it's present form, was domesticated, and spread throughout Eurasia and Africa from there.
All of these species, dinosaurs included laid eggs, so eggs came well before the modern chicken.
