Many sunflowers will do this sporadically. Commercially grown sunflowers (grown for seed) will often produce more than one head. Where did you get your seed from? Was it perhaps birdseed?

If you want only one large head, watch them as they grow and pinch out any side buds when they appear.

the variety is not the problem it is the growing method that causes this, if they have a restricted root run they will do this, also if there is not enough nutrition for the plant.

Someone once told me they were American but he didn't elaborate further. I expect that's no help at all.
