In the regional language of maharastra (hindi) BOMBAY is called as MUMBAI. thats the reason

according to me, what i know the people of bombay pronounced it mumbay, later it became mumbai and was remaned.
I AM NOT SURE ABOUT IT SO DON,T WRITE AS A ANSWER TO ANY QUESTION.
