Erm... do they?

I assume you mean a motorbike... as sitting on a bicycle sideways would make it impossible to pedal!

I have not seen this, but perhaps this is for the same reason that 'ladies' in the old days used to ride side-saddle on horses.

In the days before women wore trousers/pants and only wore long skirts, it was probably easier and more 'genteel' to side sideways than to sit astride something.

Coz in the subcontinent they have habit of wearing saree and long skirts. So u must sit sideways in those dresses, there is no other way.

well firstly, the clothes that women wear like sarees and salwar kameez/churidars etc. makes it impossible to sit cross-legged.
Secondly, there are still a lot of orthodox families which do not allow women to sit crosslegged as then their breasts touch the rider.

It is considered femine and ladylike also clothing appropriate.
