Its to do with the brain needing a boost of oxygen.

But someone also once told me it also has to do with mimicry. You see someone yawning and you start to do the same you copy what you see. Its also the same if you see someone scratching themselves or saying they are itchy you start clawing yourself to. Its so weird, isn't it.

People also yawn when they are bored and have no interest in someone/something. They aren't being stimulated and the oxygen levels start to fall resulting in yawning.

A yawn is a semi-automatic reflex that originates in the brain stem in response to a lower level of oxygen in the brain. Yawning also occurs when a person loses interest in their surroundings, i.e gets bored. It does not necessarily indicate fatigue, although people do tend to yawn when they're sleepy.

We yawn to get more oxygen to our brain, it gives us a big breath in to stop us feeling sleepy, we feel tired when there is not enough oxygen in the brain. when we see others yawn it tells us that me would probably feel less tired if we were to yawn too
