Is it just second hand books you're after or a particular title? If you're after any old book then get down to your local jumble sale are Fete just as it is finishing, they will give you them for nothing as they will only have to find some other way of getting rid of them and due to the weight that can be a problem for them. ebay might be good for a particular title but again due to the weight it can work out expensive in postage and packing

barnardos has a shop which sells just books and there are quite a lot of second hand book shops about failing that ask the library when they are having the next sale or if they know any good source

Charity shops are always a good bet. Alternatively, ask your local library when their next sale is going to be (they periodically sell of old books)

Amazon.com is a great place for new and used books, also half eBay.com. Check your local yellow pages for bookstores, sometimes there are used bookstores around, depending on the neighborhood.

depends where you are located market stalls good ones in london, second hand book shops (expensive), jumble/charity shops, boot fairs, garage sales, ask among your local community there are probably loads of people who have more paperbacks than they know what to do with.
