Mine was always Thomas Magnum. (The character) I adored him because he was so fallable. I love a guy that he could screw up royally and just keep going. He didn't brood. He loved solving a good mystery and those that know me know I'm a sucker for undercover work. (Not that kind......shame on you.) After losing his wife, you knew his heart was still with her. No greater love! But he tried to pick up the pieces of his life and move on. He had great friends......and was such a free loader. It was the perfect combination of Mr. Responsibility and Mr. Let-me-live-off-you! Too bad he was a tv character. I would have loved to be Mrs. Magnum P.I.

My favorite "Tom" is - Thomas (I'm so depressed) Hardy.

Don't ask me why, but pessimistic and bitterly ironic writing just cheers me right the heck up. And Mr. Hardy was a master of bitter irony and pessimism. I've only read three of his novels, "Far from the Madding Crowd," "Tess of the d'Urbervilles," and "Jude the Obscure" but they all moved me to tears, laughter and deep insight into the human condition.

Here's a bit from his poem - "The Darkling Thrush" (my favorite of his), which serves as a pretty good example of his style.

The land's sharp features seemed to be
The Century's corpse outleant,
His crypt the cloudy canopy,
The wind his death-lament.
The ancient pulse of germ and birth
Was shrunken hard and dry,
And every spirit upon earth
Seemed fervourless as I.

My uncle, but he is such a kiss as s. If he would only stand up for himself once in awhile. Thomas Hardy? Now there is a pessimist. HIs vision of God was someone who roles the dice and that is man's fate. A dispassionate deity who has no interest in our struggles or our outcome. Give me Tom Mix. At least he could get back in the saddle again and make you feel good about it. I'm too young to have seen him, but my father did.

Did you really like Magnum for those reasons or for the short shorts he wore? heeheehee ;-)

I used to watch Magnum, P.I. when it was on "regular" tv. Now, I try to catch the reruns on cable. Anyway...

My fave Tom would have to be Tom Jones because after 40+ years of singing "It's Not Unusual", he still sings it with energy as if it was the first time.
