Stephen King - I realize he's a very commercial author but a lot of his stuff is just really really good. The Dark Tower Series (well... not the end of them so much) and The Stand, my favorite single book. His short stories are also really good, check out Skeleton Crew and Four Past Midnight. Finally his Richard Bachman books are really thought provoking, check out The Running Man (nothing like the movie) and especially The Long Walk.

Issac Isamov - A man truely ahead of his time. His Foundation series is amazing The story of a man who develops mathmatics to a point where he can predict a coming 30,000 year Dark Age for humanity. To stop it he creates The Foundation, an enclave of science and technology to shorten the length of the dark age to 1000 years. It took him 49 years to write and has 10 books total set in the same "universe" His Robot stories are also very fun reads and thought provoking, I, Robot has most of them (once again nothing like the movie, but I recently saw Robot Visions at the bookstore which seemed to collect all the stories in one volume.

Thats two, I could go on. :)

Victoria Holt. Some of the best are: The Judas Kiss, Time of the Hunter's Moon and The Legend of the Seventh Virgin. Very good gothic/romance novels written from the 60s-early 90s.

I also love Beverly Lewis and her Amish series. They are wonderful, complicated and really give you a look at a different culture. I can't put them down!! Especially the series "Abram's Daughters" and "Annie's People". They sound simple but they aren't.

I love the books written by Raymond E. Feist. He has written many fantasy books and they are so fantastic great! He made such a good base in the first book of him that the rest of the story is technically very very good! (cause the technical base is so good, the books are amazing too).
I also like Alistair Maclean, Jean M. Auel, Tom Clancy, Bebe Moore Campbell, Karl May, J.K. Rowling and so many others!!!

Oneof my faves is John Grisham....
He so clearly captures and conveys to his readers the human condition in all it's facets. He draws the reader in and they become one with him, so to speak. Some of the best he's written in my humble opinion are "The Chamber" and "The Rainmaker", "The Client" and a real departure from any of his other works, "The Painted House". I don't think he could write a bad book!

There's a lot but one of my favorite authors is Augusten Burroughs. He wrote "Running with Scissors", "Dry", and "Magical Thinking". His books are touching but HILARIOUS at the same time. I highly recommend him.
Apart from that I love everything written by Jonathan Kellerman.

Edgar Allen Poe, his short stories are grand pieces. His gothic tales leave you in awe and amazement whilst his detective stories leave you surprised at their cunning. His works delve into that part of the human psyche which few dared touch before. He was a genius of literature.

I'd have to say Jane Austin. She is such an amazing writer. Some of her work is: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, and a couple of others. My favorite one of her books so far is Pride and Prejudice!

Stephen King; he's a master weaver of tales, creating characters that appear in several different stories in one form or another. I love the way he ties his stories together, his descriptions, and the fact that many of his stories are not of blood and gore, but of the horrors of the human mind and heart.
