As an Indian I can Think about Three Reasons :
1) Its a good way to express emotions or event (like wedding)
2) Helps in stretching movie and making it loooong.
At last
3) It helps in making a movie popular ! It helps in publicity and people here in India identify a movie not only by it's name but also by it's songs !

Musical portions of film are often used as 'filler time' - but, Bollywood films copy much of the genre's of the early Hollywood films. - Early Hollywood films were filled with music and dancing. I think the women in Indian movies are just stellarly beautiful - that is one way to entertain the viewer, of course.

dance and Music are integral part of the life of people of India. the majority lives in villages and they love song and dance. If there is no song and dance the movie will be a flop in rural India.
