Because they don't require Batteries, are already Downloaded, can be Accessed in Milliseconds from Page to Page, with no Clicking Required, can be dropped on the Floor without Shattering, can be Shared with no Password required, and with Proper Care, can last for Hundreds of Years. And if Lost or Stolen are usually Fairly Inexpensive to Replace. And They make great Gifts ! No Computer in the World can do all of that !

We need books, because books are a storehouse of knowledge and information and they record everything that is important to mankind, be it cultural, historical, scientific, religious, technological.... Just think of the storehouse of knowledge that is contained in a dictionary or an encyclopedia - and that knowledge spans many centuries!
Think of books as providing a thread of continuity which help mankind to link one day, one year, one generation, one century to the next.... In a way, books are kind of like the glue that helps hold us all together.

For entertainment. Just like you watch movies.
To get to know a person. For example, an autobiography.
To know more about a subject, such as a book on Italy.

Maximum joy!
What's more pleasurable - having real paper to flip through your hands, or scrolling on a screen?
Books can also be considered an art form.
Be it reference books, ancient scriptures, paperback novels, comics, art books or even pornography, real paper gives maximum pleasure (as long as you read it/ view it out of your own free will).

I don't know why "we" read books...I know lots of people who see my relationship with books and flee screaming. Me myself and I read books because I can't stand the sheer boredom of Earth...or rather, the ignorant society I was born into. I use them as a prompter to do more with my life. One day I hope to break the circle....and I'm getting there. :)
You know...birth, school, work, death. Books, to me, show people with courage even though they know it not.....they show me attitudes in daily life so I know them when I see them. I couldn't live without my books. Says a lot.

Books, simply put and in the fewest words, are to enlighten or entertain. Therefore, if we need to be enlightened or entertained we have books (if we so choose).
