King Artos may have been the real title of King Arthur (Artos is Latin for "bear," so it would have been a title). He lived shortly after Roman times in what is now England. He was probably Celtic, and though southwestern England claims him, I've read a pretty persuasive argument that he could have been from near Hadrian's Wall. The woman who wrote the book had first translated the legends from old French into Latin and then into Celtic (she has a degree in each). By using the rules of translation, "L'Ancelot" becomes "Anguselsus," or "The Angus" (head of the Angus clan). That would have put him near Scotland. After she translated all this, she looked for fields in the area, which could have been battlefields in the 500's. She found them exactly where they should be.

Arthur was probably a myth.
Variously he has been Welsh, English, Roman (!), Romanized Celt, Cornwellian, even Irish -- in the various stories.
Personally, I like to think he was of no particular nationality other than "British".
