Whenever someone asks what the meaning of life is, loads of people say 42. Have I missed something? I appreciate they may be trying to be funny, but whats the significance of that number? Just wondering!!!!

It is the answer given to that particular question in the book, series and movie of The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy. It didn't make any sense there either!

42 is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything - as deduced by the super computer Deep Thought. You have to have at least some knowledge of The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams to get it, and I fervently recommend you read the books, listen to the radio plays, watch the TV series, but the film is miss-able.
