why do people have sex when they know it can cause aids?
why dont people cross the street when they know they could get hit by a car?
why do people get pregnant when they know they could die at birth?
why do people eat fatty foods when they know its bad for thier health?
why do people under eat or go anorexic when they know its bad for thier health?
why do people watch tv when they know it could strain thier eyes

Because it is a drug and a habit. Once you start you really have to be in the right mind set (in my opinion) to give up. Nothing makes people smoke it is a choice, all be it a bad one, and is used as a tool to relax by some. Always in the back of the mind is the fact that is is bad for ones health but quitting any drug is not always easy.
I am a smoker and have give up previously for a number of years. I took it up again when a number of things in my life started to go badly wrong. As yet I have not reached the stage in my life where I am at peace and in the right frame of mind to give it up.

Its something we do that at one point or another we thought would make us cool or we learned it from our parents or where ever. Why do people listen to Bush when they know it's wrong? Why do people trust in a god that they have never seen? Why do women do half the things that they do? It's all so simple, not all of us have all the common sense that we should :]

alot of us started young, before common sense kicked in, and now we are addicted and it is hard to stop. You could also ask, why do people drink & drive ? Why do people take drugs ? There are many things people who normally have common sense do without thinking every day.

If a young person's best mates are smokers, (s)he will probably smoke (or start smoking) too. There's the glamour factor too- most people who smoke think it's "cool".

What makes people start to smoke: peer pressure, addiction, they enjoy it
Why do they still smoke: addiction, they still enjoy it.
People do many things that are dangerous to their health: eat wrong, don't wear seatbelts, smoke, drugs etc. Why? People want to enjoy life and some think they are invincible..."oh no, it won't kill me"....

Answer - Because they can!
People don't always do what is best for them. Just like children who like to rebel when a parent says NO, adults like to rebel when they are told something is not good for them.

In the beggining it makes you feel good (not the same to everybody)
than it's just an addiction... like any other. It has good things and bad things.

They start smoking at a young age to look cool or control weight. After they are addicted, they can't stop. (Pssst.... its not cool to kiss someone who stinks like cigarettes)
