it would just refuse to turn on. Usually it would only be succesful after a few times. Recently it got worse. By the way I noticed the CPU fan is not working. Any idea on what causes this? Has it got something to do with the fan not working? Thanks!

Thanks for all the answers! =) I am quite certain the fan is faulty but overheating should not be the source of the problem 'cos it happens when I try to switch it on as well, when the CPU is cool. So I guess the problem lies with the power supply then. I'll replace the power supply and the fan soon. My original power supply unit is 400W, is it possible that it was a little overloaded? What would be the optimum power supply unit for my system? My board is Gigabyte GA-8IG1000MK, P4 2GHz, 1Gb RAM, Leadtek A340TD FX5200 256Mb graphics card, 1 DVD rom and 1 CD rom.

Yes it has to do with the fan not working and possibly more of a problem.
The shutting it self off can be a number of things, but the fan not working is and obvious sign that your system is over heating and shuts off.
Another possible problem may be the power supply is bad or on the way out the door.

It seem that your Power Supply in out of order. My advice to you is that never compromise on the quality of the Power Supply and try not to delay the problem if your power supply is out of order it may effet your motherboard. If you have a heavy Graphics Card and a heavy motherboard then try to buy 350-400 Watt Power Supply.

You said that the fan is not working check which fan it is. If it is the fan where you connect the power cable then your Power Supply is faulty if it is the fan on your motherboard then you might be in bigger trouble because the fan on the motherboard cools the processor(Central Processing Unit(CPU)), if it the second one then go to a professtional to have the problem fixed.

It sounds to me like you have a problem with the power supply in your PC. What you are experiencing are symptoms of a power supply that is on it last legs and it will probably die completely in the near future.
Take the power supply out of your pc and take it with you to a computer hardware store and get one to replace it.
Install the new power supply and your headaches should go away.
Good luck!
