Internet Relay Chat is one of the best places to look for this sort of thing.
There are millions upon millions of chatrooms, across thousands upon thousands of different servers.
DALnet was the first and currently one of the most popular IRC networks around.
IRC can be accessed through any client supporting it, and such clients as mIRC (Windows) and X-Chat (Windows, Linux, Mac, name an operating system, it supports it) are the most popular.
When connected to an IRC server, typing:
/list
Will list every publicly visible channel (A channel is the name given to what is essentially a chat room) to you, with the option to join it.
It's quite interesting how IRC works. Being a protocol, it has a way of laying everything out, and instead of there being a command for displaying things in a channel and a command for displaying things to a specific user, they all use the same thing. A channel is technically a username starting with #, and it puts all it's private messages into one. It does this using the PRIVMSG command, which is used for private messaging. So essentially, a channel is a massive private message between a lot of users.
IRC is one of the best systems out there for chat!

There is a good avatar chat that I use regularly www.thepalace.com I think. You have to download some software but once you get the hang of avatars its great fun.

you can go to a barber shop its the best chat room you kan stay last in line all day and dont get a haircut joust chat with old people and barber.

you could try lycos but my advice would be to stay away from them altogether to many wierdos and you could get spam so just stick to here ;-)
