Never resort to algeacides, often they turn out to be fish kill... They suck the 02 out of the water and only set you up for the next batch of algae with a vengeance. If its planted, then Algae kills will also stunt the growth back. So you don't win there. But do realize a certain amount of algae is part and parcel of the echo system and also shows you have some healthy things going on!

You are probably talking about the sides of the tank and not the actual water, right? Well I don't know if you have a tank with a filter or not, but you have to keep the filter clean, and clean your tank as often as you need to. Get one of those 'sucker fish' they help a lot, as they even eat poop!

Block out all light to your tank for three days. All the algae will die and it won't harm your fish.

Buy a new light bulb, aged bulbs produce too much red spectrum light.

Update your filter with one that has a bio filter or add a simple sponge filter to your tank.

Feed less and increase the amount of water changes that you are doing

Add a plant or two to out-compete the floating algae for nutrients.

You need to clean the filters regularly (if they are fitted) and you need to change about a third of the water in the tank about twice a month. Also keep the tank out of direct sunlight!
