DEFINITION OF DAEMON (note spelling)

A program or process that sits idly in the background until it is invoked to perform its task.

DEFINITION OF VENDOR DAEMON

When a developer wants to invoke a software program, the license manager daemon is contacted initially; then the connection is passed on to the appropriate vendor daemon. Also, the license manager daemon starts and restarts the vendor daemons.

The vendor daemon tracks the licenses that are checked out and the users of those licenses. If the vendor daemon terminates, all users lose their licenses. When the license manager daemon restarts the vendor daemon, the users regain their licenses automatically.

Left over from the old unix days a daemon is a program running more as a service to provide a specific function. Something like the clock on your task bar would be an example, it is not a program as such that interfaces with the user it is just one that runs all the time in the background.

I assume vendor daemon refers to such a service program that keeps some piece of hardware running on your computer.

Not usually malicious, also nothing to do with demons.

it originated in ancient times. the greeks used it to describe something that was more than human but less than a god. Socrates was like a daemon because he was so smart and seemed to be above human desired, but he wasn't really a god.
