Just tell the bank to stop payment on it. Unless it has already cleared, they will do it for a fee.

You should be aware however, that you can then be charged with fraud and theft by the store. Unless there is a legal obligation to accept a return, they can maintain that all sales are final.

Be very careful

The bank charges a fee to cancel a check. If it isn't too late you can just tell the bank you want to cancel it. You don't have to give a reason. It is your choice. But are you just trying to get something for nothing? If the store won't take it back and you bought it and you cancel the check then this is why prices go up to cover for the store losing money from you and other who do this. It isn't fair to the rest of us.

As long as it hasn't been cashed yet, you don't have to give any reason. Just call your bank and put a stop/cancel on that check, you'll have to pay a fee. If the check has already been cashed the bank is out of it, you'll have to deal with the seller (store) and good luck with that!

I don't think you need to give them a reason - but, tell the bank that you wrote them the check as a deposit and cannot get back there to retrieve it or ensure it was destroyed.

"Stop Check" - no reason required. Just pay a cancellation fee.

To my knowledge, you don't have to give them a particular reason. Although there's usually a space to specify one, it can be anything, such as "unhappy."
