It was a Khoikhoi called Autshumato (but South Africans more commonly know him as Harry, die strandlooper.)
He was an interpreter for the Dutch in the 1600's. He managed to escape from Robben Island in about 1659.

The first ever succesful escape from Robben Island was, ironically, by its first major prisoner. A Khoikhoi leader named Autshumato. After a year and a half on the island he managed to steal a rowing boat and escape with fellow prisoner. There boat was found about two weeks later by the Dutch. They could not believe that the men had survived the difficult crossing. It was only a year later that Autshumate applied to live near the Castle again and resumed his role as interpreter he died in 1663.
Autshumato was also called Harry or Herry by the Europeans. Became an interpreter for the Europeans passing by the Cape.

His name was Autshumao, and he is reputed to be the first and only man ever to escape from Robben Island, and he did so by rowing to the mainland in a small boat. The island is most famous for being the place where Nelson Mandela was held as a political prisoner.
