ISO Certification is issued by the International Organization for Standardization. They have different qualification tests for different types of industries. It is really quite detailed, but basically an ISO certification states that your company conforms to national standards for conducting business, and that your company can be relied on for a certain level of quality.
Their website can explain the standards much better than I, there are truly a lot of specific qualifications that must be met to qualify for an ISO certification. The numbers (ie ISO9000, ISO14000...) only signify specific types of certifications based on the type of industry and the necessary requirements for that specific industry.
I believe (don't quote me on this point!) that ISO9000 is the most common certification for most businesses issued at this time. That is the certification my former company has. I worked for an office supplies distributor. When we were trying to obtain the certification, it was a company-wide effort to document all processes and procedures for pretty much every duty performed within the company. And I mean EVERYTHING... How we received inventory, how we filled orders, how we kept track of the inventory, how we paid the bills, etc etc etc...
When it comes right down to it, an ISO certification is mainly a guarantee to your customers that you can be relied on to do business in a reliable manner. It can make a big difference when a customer is trying to decide between a company that is ISO or not. The ISO certification is primarily an assurance that your company CAN, in fact, be relied on.
Good Luck!!

ISO is a quality management system. It stands for international standards organization. Their slogan is "say what you do, do what you say and prove it. By becoming registered it is determined by a certified third party (ISO auditor) that your company is capable of producing a quality product or service. Some of the different ISO registration, ISO 9000:2000 includes design engineering of the product, ISO 9002 does not. TS16949 has to do with the Auto industry basically stating that your suppliers have to be ISO registered also. There seems to be new numbers created all the time and the one you seek should apply to the type of business you are running.
