Well technically it would not have been a period as we know it - remember, your period happens when your uterus sheds the lining it had prepared for a fertilised egg, and when fertilisation does not occur the lining has to go. If you were pregnant, fertilisation obviously did occur, and if the whole lining was shed, you would have lost the baby.

What does happen is that, when the fertilised egg implants into your uterus (about 6-10 days after fertilisation, in other words anything from 20 to 30 days after the first day of your last period depending on when you ovulated), it burrows into the lining. This process could make you bleed a little. I've also read (don't know if this is true though) that the cells in the lining literally burst open at that stage to release the nutrients they were storing so that the fertilised egg has nutrients to grow. If that's true, it could obviously also cause some bleeding.

So I would say you didn't have a period, but you had implantation bleeding. It's much more accurate with a scan though, when they measure the size of the baby (not just the size of the uterus, which is all the dr can feel from the outside) to tell you how far along you are.

The other possibility is of course that you're carrying more than one baby, in which case your uterus will be bigger than it would be from just one baby.

Either way - congratulations!

Unless your doctor did a vaginal examination he can't tell if you are 8-10 weeks just by feeling your tummy. The womb is contained in your bony pelvis until around 12 weeks when it begins to rise out as it gets bigger. I have recently booked a client for care whose G.P. told her she was much further on because he felt her tummy, I don't know what he was feeling because she was only 11 weeks pregnant and the womb was most definately not palpable. Answer is, wait until your first scan, scans done between 7-14 weeks and again between18-22 weeks are very acurate at dating pregnancies. P.S. the person who told you about implantation bleeds was spot on.

Yes. Its called an implantation bleed. Its when the fertilised egg burrows into your uterus to get itself comfy. You should have had a lighter bleed than normal, but if your periods are usually light you may not have noticed anything different. However, just feeling your stomach is not an exact science. Wait til your first scan and you should find out for definate. Congratulations!!!

Pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last period so that’s why it may seem that you’re a few weeks out.

Yes you can have a period and be pregnant.. The only way to be absolutely certain of how far along you are is to have a scan.
