My computer is four years old and may be a little outdated but it suddenly took a nosedive in speed. I have two possible reasons but dont know how to solve either. 1) I noticed the decline in speed around the same time I switched from McAfee to Norton virus protection. 2) I keep getting this message telling me that my computer is low on virtual memory and that windows is increasing it temporarily. So if it is the first, is there a difference between blocking a virus and detecting/removing a virus? And if its the second...what can I do to fix the virtual memory problem? Thanks! :)

Without knowing your computer spec, sounds like your computer is kind of old and don't have enough memory. So increase memory of the computer should help.
Computer is so cheap now that you should just spend the money to buy a new computer instead of fixing up this 4 years old computer.

News flash for you!

Install avast, free, safe and fast!

"Here are the top twenty reasons that the world despises Norton;

20. Having to type in your serial number while installing, and then activate it within 20 days of installation.
19. When Norton corrupts downloading files.
18. When Norton uninstalls its self because a virus threatened it.
17. The stupid task bar tool bar thing that has pop-ups the size of greater Atlanta.
16. The live update reminders.
15. The CPU and RAM consuming virus scans.
14. Its inability to delete any virus, even ones that a three-year-old wrote.
13. How it re-adds its self to your computers start up list.
12. When it says you have spyware on your computer, then does nothing.
11. How when it quarantines a virus, it copies it to the folder.
10. If you use it to delete adware it changes your homepage and locks it.
9. After using Norton to delete spyware it tells you that you have to re-install it to open Microsoft Word.
8. The virus definitions in a Mexican health clinic are more up to date than Norton's.
7. Norton is over hyped and over-priced.
6. Requires a subscription every year.
5. On any operating system other than XP if your computer gets a virus Norton's only defense is to initiate "the blue screen of doom"
4. If it comes bundled with a computer and you don't run thorough set up it will pop back up every time you log in.
3. It tried to tell me that dtgeeks was giving me a virus.
2. The latest version blocks ports that are critical to 99.9% of Internet gaming connections.

And now for the number one reason why Norton is despised worldwide:
1. Because after you realize Norton is crap. You will also find the folder is missing the uninstaller, just like many kinds of adware.
Please feel free to correct me about any of these. As always I'm open to suggestion, and will correct any major mistakes."

Yeah, you bet!

1) Well, I think Norton is taking up too much of your ram memory space and thats one of the rason why the comp responds slowly... Try other antivirus programs like AVG from grisoft.. its a freeware available on the net for downloads.. I use it and its very safe, small and efficient.. also for more protection download.. Zone alarm.. its a firewall again a freeware available on the net..

2) May be too many cookies, catche memory, temp files, temp internet files have clogged up the bandwith.. you need a system cleanup along with defragmentation of the drive... If you are not a computer savy person... get a computer person to deal with this..

3) If the above two dont help.. then try cleaning up your memory space or install more ram.. may be deleting some programs, music, videos may clear up some memory for you... but thats not gonna make much of a difference... LASTLY I would recomment that you use freeware, opensource softwares available on the net for free instead of using huge bulky software which not only take up too much space but tend to spread wide on the computer (not sure if you are using licensed software so this will avoid piracy too)

Think wise! Think twice... :) Enjoy!

Customizing Your Virtual Memory

Right click My Computer > Properties >Advanced Tab > Performance Settings > Advance Tab > Modify Change....

Choose the Drive that you have more free space. Depending on the free space of that drive... Customize the initial size. And then the Maximum size ( do not exceed to the free space of that drive, and also do not consume all, for windows will prompt you to free some more space)...

Notice that the maximum size that youve set is deducted to the free space from that drive.... This is because it is used as the Virual Memory....

IF IT STILL DOESNT WORK, Add more RAM.....

Heres your problem...
You installed Norton on a 4 year old computer...

Norton is a very "RAM dependent" program as it is always running in the background. Your low on virtual memory message is telling you that is the problem.

Upgrade your RAM or uninstall Norton.

Make sure that Windows is free to utilize your amount of virtual memory being used. See if you can increase the amount of Memory you have (RAM), not hard drive space.

Also, programs need a certain chunk of free hard drive space available for swap files - try deleting some old games or old files or pics you don't use anymore. Try to free up at least 500 Meg. That will help out a bit at least.

The best things you can do it defragment and install more ram.. alot of people say more space will make it run faster but i don't really think so. unless you're hard drive is 99% full. Also norton uses alot of resources and has about 7 processes running all the time. i wouldn't suggest norton. you shuld restart in safe mode and see if its any faster and if it is then its most likely malware.

my computer is 5 years old and it runs great
