because according to the dictionary, the word kid has a similar meaning to the word child

It is both a straight forward shortening of children and figuratively refers to herding them like a herd of goats whose young are called - you guessed it KIDS

I think I agree with rotta1. Kids are probably named after baby goats, getting into things, climbing, jumping and of course very cute.

Young goats are called kids. It must come from that.
