There are many old wives tales on this, but I'm not convinced on any of them! The most scientific I've heard is... The male sperm are stronger and swim faster - so if an egg is in the fallopian tubes waiting - it's more likely a male sperm will reach it first. Female sperm are not as fast, but do live longer (upto 5 days) - have sex earlier in the cycle so that the sperm are waiting a day or 2 for the egg to appear - then it'll more likely be a female sperm that fertilises it. Based on a 28 day cycle, with day 14 being the most fertile - maybe do the act from day 9 - 12 to try and get a girl, and day 14 + for a boy. Who knows if it'll work....but if it does let me know - my mother in law has 5 grandsons - not sure we'll be forgiven if we make it 6!!!!

I definitely don't think there's any proven method (other than artificial conception, outside the uterus, where the dr then chooses an embryo to implant). I have heard some pieces of advice that you may try, maybe it'll work:

As you probably know, the sex of the baby is determined by the type of sperm that fertilises the egg. A Y-chromosome sperm will result in a boy, an X-chromosome sperm will result in a girl. The X-chromosome is larger than the Y-chromosome, but sperm carrying X lives longer. Sperm carrying Y swim faster. So the advice is as follows: Have sex as close to ovulation as possible, and abstain for a few days before. If the egg is ready for fertilisation when you have sex, chances are a Y-chromosome sperm will reach it first.

There are some dietary theories, saying that dairy products like cheese will make your chances of having a girl go up, while red meat will give you a better chance of a boy. Hope you're not vegetarian, otherwise this one won't work!

One of the more wacky theories say that sperm don't like heat, but X-chromosome sperm are more hardy so take longer to die. So the advice is to wear tighter underpants if you want a girl, as this will heat your testicles and kill off the weaker (Y-chromosome) sperm. Wearing loose underwear like boxer shorts will avoid this, so better chance of a boy.

If your wife has an orgasm during sex, it's believed that her vagina will become more alkaloid, which favours Y-chromosome sex. So if you want a boy, your chances increase if she has an orgasm.

Another wacky one: If a man has coffee before having sex, his Y-sperm are more active and this means the Y-sperm swim even faster, so even better chance of a boy.

Hope this helps a bit! I haven't tried any of these, but hopefully you'll have a boy!

If you have IVF and the doctors only implant male embryos in the uterus you will be guaranteed a son however this sort of thing is illegal in the United States and probably most civilized countries... sorry.

Many families have 2 daughters and then a son... so there is hope for you! Best of luck and I hope you have a HEALTHY baby whatever the sex is.

Men have the gene which determines sex in the baby. Scientifically there is no possible way to be 100% sure that you will have a boy.

But, i heard a myth that when the male is in a dominant or powerful position over the women while she conceives that it will be a boy. But again just a story I've heard.

Check out the Chinese calender at www.ivillage.co.uk. I still don't know what my baby will be, but the moment I saw the ultrasound I felt it was going to be a boy... I could be wrong though... but I hope for your sake, it's healthy.... I also heard from a friend whose sister lives in UK that she's doing this diet thing from some books. Apparently you have to eat some certain foods before you conceive... Check it on the internet.

Supposedly you are meant to have sex right at the time of ovulation to have a boy and a couple of days before to have a girl. The theory is that male sperm swim faster than female sperm so if you do it exactly when the egg is released the male sperm reach it first. Good luck.

You cannot be sure, but there ARE ways of tipping the probabilities in your favor. You will need a number of ovulation tests, because it's all about timing. There are some other methods for trying to determine the time of ovulation, but the tests are not expensive so you should go with them. Read how to do it here: http://www.babyhopes.com/how-to-conceive-a-boy.html

No, sorry. There are many wives tales, but its just pot luck. My hubby has a theory that if the wife is the more dominant one in the relationship then you will have son's to balance up the power in the house. Its worth a try.

My wife told me later in the cycle means a boy and earlier in the cycle means a girl. Not sure if it works, but she applied it and we have a boy with a girl on the way, which is what she wanted. I am happy with either as long as they look like me ;-)
