From my experience as a pharmacist and a small research that I did in wikipedia and medlineplus, I can say that in healthy individuals is non toxic and exhibits almost no toxic side effects.
You don't say if you take any other medicines actually. Usually, it is well accepted, a general rule is to take care to the combination of action between medicines and remember that sometimes you have to adjust the dosage form.
In wiki, it is mentioned that melatonin taken in combination with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) can lead to overdose because MAOIs inhibit the breakdown of melatonin by the body.
So, take care if you take any antidepressant medicines and also when you eat some kinds of yellow cheese while you take melatonin.
However exogenous melatonin - that is food supplements - normally does not affect the endogenous melatonin profile in the short or medium-term - that is taken for short periods of time - merely advancing the phase of endogenous melatonin production in time.
Remember that
- In individuals with auto-immune disorders, there is concern that melatonin supplementation may exacerbate symptoms due to stimulation of the immune system.
- Melatonin causes somnolence, and therefore should not be taken within five hours before driving, operating machinery, etc. - As melatonin is almost always taken at the end of the waking day, this is generally not an issue.
- Individuals who experience orthostatic intolerance, a cardiovascular condition that results in reduced blood pressure and blood flow to the brain when a person stands, may experience a worsening of symptoms when taking melatonins supplements, a study at Penn State College of Medicine's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center suggests. Melatonin can exacerbate the symptoms by reducing nerve activity in those who experience the condition, the study found.
It is mentioned also that as it is a natural substance with a virtual absence of problematic side effects, with health benefits to users without illnesses, melatonin has been classified as a dietary supplement and made freely available in the USA, but in the EU over the counter sale without prescription is not yet officially permitted.
At this point I have to say that this is not valid for all Europe, as we can give it as an OTC product.
Let me go a moment further.
Moderate also the coffee / tea amount that you are taking during the day and your lifestyle.
Try to exercise regularly and change habits, like quit smoking.
Cigarettes contain nicotine that it a vasoconstrictive substance.
What does this mean?
When you try to think about something, your body sends a bigger quantity of blood in your brain;blood is bringing oxygen and nutrients in our body and the vasoconstrictive effect of nicotine doesn't allow the correct amount of blood to arrive there. So, you will maybe feel dizzy and tired.
Moderate also your diet, taking antioxidants of natural provenience like fruit juice, olive oil and avoid artificial fat, preservatives ecc.
Some food like eggplants that contain magnesium (Mg) could help and there is no danger to overdose if it is a natural source.

I couldn't get to sleep around a week ago, cause I was excited about an event I was going to attend the next day. So I took a melatonin pill, an hour later I was wide awake, so I took another one, another hour I was wide awake, so I took another one and all I remember was waking up the next morning. So I know I can take 3 pills safely.
But if your not comfortable taking sleeping pills, then I would consult with a doctor, for a proper prescription or advise you on the melatonin your taking.

I have done some research and the optimum dose seems to be around 10mgs. It is risky taking larger doses than the packet advises because although melatonin is a natural product that we make in our body it can still be toxic to our systems. Reports have been made of people who suffer allergies and breathing problems with larger doses also very rarely it has been linked with liver disease.
If you have sleep problems it would be wise to see your doctor as there could be a physical cause for this. Then the doctor could prescribe something for you rather than you self treating which can be very dangerous if you don't have the knowledge to do so!!!

Ive been taking melatonin for quite sometime now and the maximum is 3 mg per night.
It has helped me tremendously. However, revovery time when waking up is a bit longer than usual.
Try it for a couple of nights and have a check up with a physician

The maximum recommended dose is 50mg at bedtime, there are always side affects with any drug you take, dry mouth being the most common but with sleeping pills I found my recovery time in the morning was extended.

None, he gave Neo a choice, he says: This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes. Of course, Neo chose the red one. You see, it's all about choices.

they are only supposed to be used to train your brain to induce natural sleep. Over a period of time they cause your pigments in the skin to die leaving blotchy patches. My son was taken off this because of the side effects

Sleeping pills are not good for you and are mentally addictive so stay clear unless you are using them for a short term issue.
