It's best, but hardest, to remember that sex offenders are everywhere. It's a difficult balance between being safe and being paranoid but the truth is with modern transport and road systems, you are just as much in danger from the person who lives 50 miles away, as from the person who lives 2.
If their is an incident worrying you, get in touch with your local police station, they will advise you.
