A friend of arms claims he has no pain receptors in his hands- I was wondering if this could be true?
On a side note, could you physiologically alter a human being so they did not feel pain? I have heard about people conditioning themselves against it, but never being able to not actually feel it?
Thanks

I live with pain now 25 years and I will be the first to tell you that tolerance does build up to a point, but your still human and it still hurts, but not the kind of hurt otherts feel. That's why people that live with chronic pain are much stronger than those who have no pain at all.

Well, you hear about people running over hot coal and glass, so there must be some technique to reducing the pain factor - even tho it might be for a short time only.
It is possible that your friend feels no pain but I think it is very rare. I have read of children that have done a lot of harm to themselves because they can't feel pain - even walking around on broken ankles or hands in the fire - but this is usually diagnosed very early on in life and I don't know what happens as far as treatment goes.
Perhaps your friend just has a genuine complaint and that he does have numbness in his hand.
Or you could test his claims and try pricking him with a pin when he's least expecting it!

there is a medical condition that means you can't feel pain.
i remember a baby being born with it and the doctors said how dangerous it was because pain is our early warning system that something is wrong.
i have also heard about people who can sort of hypnotise themselves to the point where they don't need anaesthetic for an operation!!
i don't believe you can alter your pain receptors but you can switch of your brain to pain if you know how to. i wish i did as i have arthritis and that is pain full, although as you say, i don't know about conditioning but i have a greater pain tolerance after 15 years of suffering.
so the answer to both your questions is yes they are both true. the only proof though is media coverage of these events.
hope that's been of use to you x

Hypnosis apparently makes things painless but when you wake up you feel all the pain you have had during this in one short burst! Yikes! This guy might have blood loss in his hand or spinal injuries which permanently (or temporarily) shut down your nerve system in the affected spinal area. The more pain you encounter the less painful things get. So if you don't want to feel pain, break your spine or start boxing!

Yup a real condition for sure. Also hypnosis can stop you feeling pain, a new technique in medical surgery too.

There is a medical condition (I don’t know its name) where you cant feel pain and some suffers can bite themselves and draw blood without feeling anything, but sometimes its mind over matter.

yes it is possible for you not to be able to feel any pain at all. in some cases experts think of it as a disease which can be very dangerous to health.
also, martial artists do various types of strenght training to learn to handle and manage pain. but i highly doubt that they can shut pain out completely

Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If you quit, however, it lasts forever.
