How do I find food (beyond the fruit) in virtual villagers? LOTS OF POINTS!?

I have uncovered the beach by cleaning it, but it says that my villagers dont know how to fish. How do I aquire this? Obviously I am just starting out, so the food info is great, and any info on how to survive further is greatly appreciated! Thanks!! :)

One thing you can do, until you are able to learn to farm and fish, is to have the children gather mushrooms.

Make certain you have a child, because only they can pick mushrooms.

You'll see them pop up from time to time, keep scanning your village for them. When you see one, grab a child and plop him/her down on the thing. They will pick it and take it to the food storage area. Each brown mushroom is worth about 8 food points. Red mushrooms are worth...30-45 points.

A good strategy to increase your mushroom haul is to pause your game and gather children one at a time, putting them down at the mushroom. The child's info will tell you when they are picking the mushroom. Get as many children as possible on that mushroom area, then unpause the game. I've been able to gather as many as 22 mushrooms this way. It saved my little virtual skin a few times. ; )

If you have a school, you can more easily get the children to gather mushrooms for your. Just call them all to school before you pause the game.

You need to work on first getting level 2 of Farming -- which of course means lots of research to secure enough tech points.

The best way to start it out is to have one person farming -- gathering the fruit and set everyone else to work on research. You can wait to build the extra hut and what have you after you get Level 2 of farming.

Your best bet is to wait to have children until you have at least the Level 2 Farming. Remember that children eat just as much as the adults do but the kids don't actually do anything (aside from pick the mushrooms) until they turn 14... at which point all they can do is work; kids don't breed until they are 18.

And the extra food.... Red mushrooms give you more food points than the other colored ones -- but you have to have a kid to pick them.
