Got minor children? You'll need a lawyer to get the divorce, you can start saving up for it. Or, if you can, set up a payment plan with the lawyer.
No kids? You can file without a lawyer and get the divorce. Non contested, no fault. It'll still cost you for filing and court cost, but it'll be cheaper than having to pay a lawyer on top of it. And you may have to dig around in the local library's legal section to find out the process of filing, but it could be worth your effort and save you a few dollars.

Depending on the state you are in, you can file a do it yourself divorce. i live in California and it cost me about $4 to divorce my first wife. I went to the family court and bought the documents ($4), read the docs, got help from the volunteer lawyers in the court bldg. Filed for a fee waiver because my income at that time was low. get the filed paper work stamped by the clerk and if you know where you husband is send him a copy. he has thirty days to reply. If you don't know where he is post a notice in the local newspaper and post a copy of the papers in the courthouse bulletin board. still he has thirty days to reply. If he does not reply the judge will grant you an immediate divorce. good luck. and don't forget about the fee waiver, must courts will not volunteer this info to you, so please ask.

Start saving!!! It took me 2 years to save for my divorce. In the UK it costs £300 in court fees, plus £39 for your decree absolute. I also paid a company £70 to prepare my papers for me, if you are good at understanding legal jargon you can do it yourself, but I had no clue what they were talking about. If you use a solicitor expect to pay upwards of £1000
