Best doesn't-give-a-**** attitude: The Sex Pistols

Most kickass music (Including lyrics): The Clash

For actually managing to stay together for a decent amount of time: The Adicts

Founding Fathers: The Velvet Underground

Best Grungey Punk: The Distillers and X

Best 80s Hardcore Punk: The Dead Kennedys, Agent Orange and Bad Religion (Extra props to Bad Religion for amazing lyrics)

Best pop punk that isn't absolute crap: The Ramones (pop punk no matter what anyone says), The B-52s, The Talking Heads and Generation X

Best NYC Punk: Iggy Pop (The Stooges) and The New York Dolls

I can't think of anymore right now, but I'm tired, so who knows?

Sex Pistols. Real punk was a short lived media PR frenzy that was in the right place at the right time, it wasnt a reaction to prog rock but something that had always been there but had never had the right conditions to prosper. Punk is rock and roll with less solos, shorter hair, and more relation to the real world (although some protest songs are dumber than singing about guuurls). U2 apparantly started off as punk - nuf said.
