Yes you are right. SD Cards are made with Flash ICs. Flash ICs are non-volatile memory components and are many times written and many times read. But due to the type of Flash ICs used would determine the number of read/write cycles it can sustain. To put it simply, Flash ICs are two types, SLC and MLC [Single-Logic-Chip] and [Multi-Logic-Chip]. SD card made with SLC chips would sustain 100,000 read/write cycles and SD card made with MLC ships can sustain read/write cycles. So, if you hv bought a SD card of a particular make which uses MLC chips, then it can only sustain 10,000 R/W cycles. That 10,000 cylces may exceed the usability [lifetime] of the SD card is another subject.

10,000 maybe the Q.A. average statistics. I mean they did a quality tests on how the card will last given extreme use. The average or some statistical formula of sampling they conclude 10,000 times thats not exactly the life of each card bough or sold. Some may be defective upon purchase. Some may even lasts 10,000 plus times. Some less.

Besides that do you think your going to delete and write 10,000 times. You may have changed to a new storage medium before your 5,000 deleting and writing.

Start counting - I mean really who cares? The whole technology will probably be obsolete long before you count to 10 000. Cards cost almost nothing now, what does it matter if you have to replace one in 30 years time?
