No. If you don't respect and love yourself first, then the love that you show them through your martyrdom is not only shallow, but just a way of trying to control them through trying to make them feel guility for "all you have done for them" or "all that you have had to put up with because of them" and they will only come to resent you for it.
Sometimes love is being tough and confronting bad behavior, especially if it is damaging to them, their health, others or you and putting limits on what you will tolerate as far as their treatment of you...they will respect you more in the long run for being honest and strong.

No. Figure out why you are being a martyr...insecurites about your loved one perhaps. Poor communication most likely in such cases...someone talking and the other not listening. It's a futile attempt at reaching someone's heart that may not want to extend it.

uh, in fact it is the least effective way.
you love someone but you are willing to take yourself out of their life? It would make more sense that you being a live has more use for that someone to direct their love towards.
