You're right - his full name was Sergeant Nicholas Alkemade. He was flying over Germany when the Luftwaffe shot him down. As his aircraft spiralled downwards in flames he realised his parachute was not accessible from his position in the tail gunner seat. Preferring a quick death over a protracted one, he jumped from the plane with no parachute. Remarkably he fell into a pine forest and onto snow. He was able to get up with no serious injuries. The Gestapo caught him and he was interred in a POW camp where he became a minor celebrity for a remarkable act of bravery.

He died in 1987.

Just a guess but you might do a search of RAF Hendon and I know the tale - he was the rear gunner and his Lanc was shot up by a German night fighter

Hi
Yes his name was Nicholas Alkemade

It was 18,000 feet
He was a "Tail End Charlie" rear gunner and he landed in pine trees and soft snow and hopped away on only a sprained ankle.
