Formerly Infectious Agent I have changed my display name. I received a personal mail from one of the two major irritants in the South African section telling me "You had better stop your personal insults you twisted little tosser" based on the fact that I disagree with his stand on crime in South Africa and his attitude on South Africa, and that I have been rather vocal about it.

I do not support Neil Watson (crimexposouthafrica), Jan Lamprecht (africancrisis.org), the Real Realist (southafricaiscrap) and their suuporters nor do I support the actions of Charles Nqakula, Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, Jacob Zuma or Comrade Tony and others like them.

There are some 12 - 15 causes of crime besides government non-action and various permutations of those and neither side are addressing crime at that level. Much of the propaganda being spread by certain Yahoo Answers members about SA is such rubbish and based on lies and half truth.

So, am I twisted little tosser for taking this stand?

Propaganda: a specific type of message presentation directly aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of people, rather than impartially providing information.

For more on propaganda and what it really entails read the following:

Jacques Ellul - Propaganda, The Formation Of Men's Attitudes.
Theodore Dalyrymple - Our Culture, What's Left Of It
Rob Weatherill - Cultural Collapse
CS Lewis - First and Second Things

Funnily enough I do live in South Africa and have done so all my life. This forum is about answers and questions and not about personal attacks (as now stated my the irritant who mailed me) yet, the person who says this engages in this very action he deplores.

There's no need to link Neil Watson, Jan Lamprecht and The Real Realist to the far right because they do so themselves by either declaring it or allowing others to post on their sites promoting those ideas.

I deplore the SA governments stance on crime as I deplore the stance of these South African crime websites and their supporters who would do nothing rather than create a negative view of South Africa based on one aspect of the country and ignore the other great things about South Africa.

Neil Postman comments on this type of behaviour in his book Technopoly. Go and read that and then present a better case.

Cash-in-transit heists daily? the list goes ooooonnnnnnnnnn.

My friend, if you live in South Africa, WAKE UP!!!

If you look at the latest statistics on crime in SA, you will clearly see that SA is SICK, VERY SICK!!!!

And if the government takes the stand of "If you don't like it here, then F>>> OFF!!!", things won't get better any sooner!!!

Propaganda, is that what you call the truth if you don;t like it?...

South Africans living in South Africa are very sensitive about people critisising their country. The crime is a major problem but they are helpless with the present government not doing anything about it. SA is such a great country in so many ways and South Africans are always hearing people go on about crime and they have to live with it. Im guessing you are a South African living out of the country and feeling quite smug, not sure why you would have such knowledge of SA politicians and such strong views otherwise?

Don't know much about it, but it sounds like you have a valid argument. People have lots of opininions about crime in Britain and how and why it is caused. Most of them get it from the trashy tabloids and their backward older relatives/ colleagues. Needless to say, most of what the general public "know" about crime is bollox. It is a complex issue and most of the true ways to solve it involve spending lots of money and NOT looking out for Joe Average, who should be doing a lot more to protect himself anyway and probably wastes a lot of police time and resources by committing traffic offences and the like.

Are you twisted? - not obviously
Are you a tosser? - aren't we all, now and then? A good cleaning of the pipes helps prevent prostate cancer, so make sure you get yours!

no you are not. Each to his own opinions and beliefs. I live in South Africa and I see how bad the crime and government are on a daily basis, in fact a friend of mine was murdered 2 days ago. However it is rather disconcerting to come to Yahoo questions to be bombarded with insults and pointed fingers about how crap South Africa is. What frustrates me the most is most of the finger pointers dont even live here anymore. Anyway.. say what you need to say.

edit that... i just found out that a woman up the road has been kidnapped by a gang of thugs... *sigh*

Yeah, why can't people see the nice side of South Africa? Let me tell you, you know that thing they say: Any publicity is good publicity, well that unfortunately is what's happening.

I totaly agree with you on this one. And no, according to your comment, I don't think you are a twisted little looser.

Freedom of speech honey, freedom of speech!!!!

Intelligent discussion can only help to dispel the ignorant musings of all those people who hold strong opinions on something they have no experience of. If you have been there and know what you're talking about - speak up!
