my eclipse seems to be running alot louder. i recently did an oil change of lucas and 4 quarts of castrol. it has 103,000 miles. it does well on gas, but it seems to decrease in performance. when i keep it running at 2,000rpms, it doesnt keep a smooth run, you can hear some pops here and there. does it mean it needs new spark plugs?

You can be experiencing valve tap. If it makes like a really loud ticking sound then it is most likely valve tap. This can be remedied by getting valve adjustment. Also Mitsubishi's are notorious for having crankwalk with the 4G64 motors (1995+ GS or RS models). Crankwalk is when the basically the crankshaft starts fouling and starts to kinda buckle. Rod bearings start coming loose and make loud sounds on the bottom end of the car. But listen carefully to your engine and see if there are any loud noises associated with your loss of performance. Also if you run 87 octane gas (regular) it can lose performance also because if your motor is a turbo motor then running 87 octane is a killer for those Mitsubishi turbo motors. It causes decreased performance as well as a lot of knocking sounds. If you are running a turbo motor please use 91 or 92 octane and some octane booster to remedy the loss of power. It also does well with non-aspirated motors (non-turbo). You should see if that works.

Hmmm...if the guy above was actually a mechanic he would know that the engine in the 95-99 Eclipse RS and GS is the 420A engine...which was made by Chrysler and is a pile of crap.
The 420A does not suffer from crankwalk, but its a horrible engine.
The second generation Eclipse (95-99) GS-T and GSX are powered by a 4g63 that suffers from crankwalk. Its a strange phenomena by all means.
Combining the first gen 4g63 block and the second gen 4g63 cylinder head you get a more reliable, strong 4g63.

first off crankwalk is when the crank starts walking out the front of the block also these motors bust the harmonic balancer all the time. also the timing belts are junk if you buy one of these cars that's they first thing you do as when they go it takes the head i know from having them snap on my 90 same motor yes the one guy was right use the earlier block and later head i would do the timing belt also you can try the plugs but good lick also the turbo can go to crap if you cant figure it out English racing is the place to call or go hes the best in the northwest and problem farther out http://www.englishracing.net you wont be disappointed.

I had the same problem a few years back, the problem turned out to be my ecu went bad... but now its happening again... car lacks power at 2500 rpm... if you have a 94 or older eclipse you might need to get it check out anyway... these years are notorious for burned ecu's... good luck

The answer is right here>>>DynoTune your Eclipse and let the performance begin.
A good tuner is hard to find, but a highly skilled tuner is worth their weight in gold.

You need to do a basic tune up. Also, if you change the oil make sure to change the filter. You may also want to inspect your exhaust system, and vacuum hoses.
