To spend more $$$ just for "External". LOL (but it's true you spend more $$$ on external rather internal).

OK...

1) More space for your favorite data (music, movies, pictures, data)
2) Back up data in easy way.
3) To boot Windows when drive C crashed.
4) So small not that heavy and you can carry anyshere you want.
5) Of course security
6) A bit expensive

A lil' tip: Make your own External Hard Drive....

Buy an internal hard drive and a external drive exclosure (cheaper by +/- USD20-30 even in some point USD50)

There are several advantages.

1) Good for backup as you can store it securely if you are really worried about your data

2) Can go anywhere so if you are regularly on the move then you can move large amounts of data easily however a lap top can do the same job and doesn't require a computer at the other end to connect. Good for say a project you are working on at home and work and don't want to carry a lap top around all the time.

3) Security - as it can be taken anywhere you can keep sensitive data more secure - in a safe for instance.

4) Less wear and tear as it less likely to be accessed as often as that on which your operating system resides as it will be getting constant requests from the operating system.

5) More robust - they come in hard case which helps protect the disk a little more but still wouldn't go throwing it around.

Externals are great for a few reasons...

Obviously you can totally boost your HD space by adding another.

You can use the xternal hard drive to boot Windows incase C drive crashes.

You can back up your computer so easily with an external attached.

They are mobile...so you can pack them up, take them with you wherever you go and hook up to an available computer. Can't do that with your home system.

Also, great for storage so your home system isn't heavy with unnecessary stuff. I have one hooked up and send all items that I wish to keep forever on it (photo's, documents etc) and I leave all my other system, game programs on my internal hard drive.

I really like to know that if there was a fire in my home I can grab the kids, grab the HD, yank it out the back of computer and run. I don't want to go scrabbling for albums and folders in my file cabinet.

Mobility and safeguarding files and photos. If you use an external hard drive for that purpose, don't keep it in the same place as your PC. Put it in a safety deposit box so that if you have a house fire or other tragedy, it will have alot better chance of staying intact.

they are distinctly sensible for having backups of your files and media. It also delivers the convinience of portability so as that in case you ever prefer to move those files to a unique computing device on the purpose of you, you could only convey that exterior difficult stress to it, truly of utilizing a USB key or some on line storage equipment. USB keys are also very sensible for this purpose in spite of the indisputable fact that exterior difficult drives are exponentially higher because they are easily difficult disk drives as hostile to maximum USB keys, which use flash memory that can't carry as a lot files.

Hi John,

For me, they are best for backing up my digital photos. I had a hard drive crash once, and Im a bit paranoid of losing them. Everything else can be replaced, you know? Since it doesnt always boot up, shut down, boot up, shut down, it receives a lot less wear and tear, thus less likely to wear out and get corrupt and lose your data. So can feel a bit safer now.
