Up to this point, I've been psychologically healthy enough to not be a perfectionist. I have high standards, but I don't waste time doing things that don't matter perfectly.

It seems like you have to be perfect to compete these days. Have had perfect grades ten years ago, had all the right career choices and companies, know all the right people, and do and say all the right things.

Hello? sorry, I'm not that shallow, but I have to eat too.

So I almost wonder if it wouldn't be worth changing my personality and becoming a psychologically crippled perfectionist. At least with all the money I'd make, I'd be able to afford therapy.

It is great to want to excel at things, but you also need to make your self happy. If you are putting to much pressure on yourself, it isn't worth it. Do your best and be happy with the result, even if it isn't perfection.

Normally, I don't answer questions like this, but I think you are being honest about it.

I've spent a good part of my life being a perfectionist, and all it did was hurt me. I finally realize that people are not perfect, including me. There is an old saying that says: "Do the best you can." I have finally come to realize the wisdom in that.

The more you try to do things perfectly (which is what a perfectionist is), the more you will frustrate yourself. As humans, we are all imperfect, and there will always be flaws.

If you just do the best you can at what you're doing, and allow yourself the knowledge that sometimes things won't work out the way you thought, then go on and do the best you can after that, I don't think anyone can expect more.

There is the key, by the way -- don't expect more of yourself than you can do. That brings up another old saying: "To thine own self be true." One way that makes sense is that, when you do the best you can at something and it isn't perfect, you can know -- in your own mind -- that you gave it your best shot. You don't owe anyone an apology for that. You've done the best you can, and in that way you have been true to yourself. Don't lower your head to anyone because of it. Go on to the next thing, and do the best you can.

Trying to be a perfectionist in an imperfect world is an impossibility. However, whatever field you choose to follow, learn all you can about it. Even go beyond schooling. Research things on your own. Learn all you can from school, then read whatever you can find on that subject. Ask questions from people who are considered well-qualified in your chosen field. The more you know about your chosen path, the better-qualified you will be.....even if you're not perfect. Do this, and you will at least be satisfied with what you do.

Either you are or you aren't. Not everyone can have OCD tendencies sitting in an archaeology lab sorting bits of broken glass and rusted metal because you just can't walk away from a half-assed job. It means cheap entertainment, but not many thrills.

Seriously, it all depends on your measure for success. Perfectionists don't get all the dough, because we spend too much time worrying about little details to make it perfect and can't cut and run when a bad decision is made that sinks the whole project.

You want the apparent perfectionist overlaying a general apathy toward anything but appearance of sucess. You have to be the type that says "I just shine the front of my shoes, I don't care what they think as I leave the room." THAT is where the money is. If you are self-reflective enough to ask the question, I don't think you're shallow enough to live that way.

let me make my answer little esoteric....

What is perfection?

To me, perfection is an attribute of an object or action, which makes that object or action to appear to a human being like the exact one as it should be WITHOUT ANY OBSERVABLE ERROR BY THE HUMAN MIND.

Please give importance to the words above which are in Capital letters. Probably you re-read the above para few times.

I hope my definition of perfection is clear.

So don't strive too much for perfection as long as it is acceptable to fellow human beings or self or both.

This way you may manage your mind and time effectively and efficiently.

For e.g., in my answer above, there may be some minor typo-errors/grammatical errors etc.
but I've not given much thought about it.
Because I believe, the text and its meaning would be clear to the reader. To me, the above text itself is perfect and hope alsw to you !

Yes, you should. It takes tons of practice, though, but one day you'll get this perfectionism down perfectly.

You should learn to live with your imperfections. But I also think that when you know better, you have to do better. At least you should try to do better...
