Im not sure what the weather is like in san diego but succulents are hardy plants that require very little watering and survive most harsh elements of weather... you can get a variety in different shades and shapes... if you put decorative stones in a contrasting colour around them, it not only looks nice but is functional in keeps pests such as snails etc off them... visit your local nursery and see what they have to offer...

PS - Jade (one type of succulent) is a good feng shui plant which brings good luck for your finances :)

Erigeron, Veronica, Areneria, Brachycome, Convolvulus, Pig Face, Arctotis, Colenema just to name a few. All plants that will give near year round colour that need little or now attention. Happy planting.

You can try planting bougainville..It thrives in sunny weather and does not need caring at all. Your other option is kalachuchi..Once planted, it will bloom no matter what...

I THINK SOME NICE KAKTUS WILL BE RIGHT, I HAVE SOME KAKTUSS, I PUT THEM IN A NICE CHINA POTS AND THEY LOOK CUTE. NOT SO MUCH CARE, ONLY GIVE WATER ONCE A WEEK, AND PUT THEM NEAR TO THE SUNLIGHT
