This word is form the Old Teutonic word ham, meaning crooked, being first the part of the leg that crooks. The ham actor is a combination of the cockney hamateur (amateur, via the French from the Latin amatorem, lover, from the Latin amare, amat, to love, whence came English amatory) and Hamlet, the most frequently mis perfomed fole, Cp. monk. From"the bend of the knee" (Old English hamm, crooked), this word was extended up and back to the thigh; Cp. garter.
