I noticed several coworkers must have picked up information here and there during daily conversations with me over the past 6 months--piecing together bits of personal information regarding my family history I was not trying to hide but did not particularly want shared with anyone at work for professional reasons. Oops! Now it seems clear to some people I am not sharing a juicy part of my past and they are curious and asking questions. Should I feel complimeted they want to know more about me? or are they just being nosey and possibly eager to gossip? The two of the coworkers asking questions I talk to daily I considered "work friends" but their friendship would not extend outside of work.

Just tell them that you are there to work and don't particularly want to talk about personal information. Hopefully they will then back off.

You should start practising more CAUTION with what you are sharing with your colleagues and 'work friends'.
It's not good to say so much about your personal stories since they are only people you talk to at work.
No you should not feel complimented when they ask more about you, because these people are just hungry for some stories and you are one person who is quite open with your stories. That's why they come to you.

they sound intruding and nosey, with no regard to imposing on your privacy. i don't know what kind of work you do, but i used to work retail...which thrived on any sort of gossip--which sounds like to me what they are after. i wouldn't tell them anything you wouldn't want the whole place to find out.
also since you said "several co-workers" picked up info, leads me to believe that someone is spreading it.

If you are not hanging out with them outside of work, then its gossip. I would not reveal any more if you don't want to deal with it on a daily basis.

You don't have to share anything if you don't want you, it's your personal choice, and sometimes it's good to be careful with whom you talking about your life, so they wouldn't use it against you in the future.

You should not feel complimented. Tell them you don't want to talk about your personal business with people who are not part of it and then don't.
