I live in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and would be willing to drive (not fly) drive up to 5-6 hours one way from where we are. I need ideas for places to go and things to do for our very 1st anniversary together. We are willing to go to the States or stay in Canada, as long as the driving distance is 5-6 hrs one way. We are looking to stay at least 1 night to 2 nights.

A lot of people in Detroit go over to Windsor to go to the casino for special occasions... but I'll assume that since you live there, you wouldn't want to do that.

I'll give you three suggestions, in order of normal, a little odd, and possibly crazy.

A normal suggestion would be to research bed/and breakfast places... there's probably some very nice ones on the road towards Toronto in Canada... you'd have to do research, but a nice, quiet trip to a quaint little B&B that has activities like horseback riding or paddleboats or things like that that you can do together would be very nice.

A slightly more unique experience would be to come into Michigan and take a road trip to Frankenmuth, MI (about an hour from the tunnel or bridge). There's restaurants, fun things to do, small German bars and nightclubs, and a great big hotel (i forget the name) with an indoor water park I believe. Just do an internet search on Frankenmuth, MI and you'll either like the idea or hate it.

My last and slightly crazy idea would be to take a road trip on a weekend to Cedar Point... (www.cedarpoint.com) it's in Sandusky, Ohio... it's a huge amusement park with lots of roller coasters... it's about 2.5 hours away from Detroit. In the fall, they're only open on weekends, and it's called Hallo-weekends... all the rides are open, and later at night, and the workers dress in costumes and try to scare you as you walk around. It's a lot of fun... and there's hotels nearby so you could go there on a Saturday morning, check in to your hotel, ride the rides, stay late Saturday night, and spend Sunday exploring Ohio or finding something creative or interesting to do (check out the city of Sandusky's website). It's a little pricey (tickets cost $29.95 each, then there's the hotel rate, etc...) but it's a fun way to spend all day together.

well this would be the full 6 hour drive from Windsor, but here is what I would reccomend.

Cross over to Detroit and take I 75 north to Mackinaw City. Go to Mackinaw Island. There are a lot of places to stay on the island, if you want to go all out for the anniversary go to the Grand Hotel, although you can stay more cheaply than that.

The trip will be memorable, staying the island is unique. There are no cars allowed on the island, travel is by bicycle or by horse/carriage. Great way to spend some time together and it will be beautiful in the fall.

Why not head for Niagra Falls?? Your side (the Canadian side) is the nicer of the two. Generally, I try to push Michigan as a tourist destination but I guess I would need more info to try to match your interests to a suitable spot here- are you looking for a more private place in a small town, a larger city-like setting, or, somewhere very secluded like a cabin in the woods? somewhere with lots of activity choices or not much going on? the woods? the water? nature vs urban etc.? 5-6 hours of driving from Windsor covers much of Michigan (and Ontario as well). Shoot me a message and I'll do my best to try and match you up to somewhere I think that would best match your tastes. Otherwise, check out the links below.

What about Toronto? I thought Toronto was beautiful and alot of fun. Believe it or not, there are some very nice places right over the border in Detroit.
