I have a B.A. in Diplomacy & Foreign Affairs from a top school and much of my experience has been in sales and politics. I want to transition into market research because my true interests lie in problem solving, statistics, consumer behavior, formulating strategies, etc. Any advice?

Given that you are not truly entry-level, I would suggest that you use your personal and business network to help with your job search. Networking is often the best tool for switching career. Colleagues are not threaten because you are not competing in the same field as they are and often very willing to introduce you to their friends.
The second approach is to identify a list of market research companies where you want to work, i.e. Forrester, Gardener's, Reuters etc. Then market your skills to them.
The third approach is look for job openings online. You can do keyword searches like Market research job. This probably lead you to mostly job boards, some professional organizations' job listings or some direct company hires.
