Are they small fruit flies or are they gnats?

Well, I'll tell you how I deal with gnats and use what you want of it...

WMD - Get what are commonly referred to as "Flea Bombs".
Buy the cheapest ones you can. The more expensive ones are
more effective at keeping the flea eggs that might be present at the time from hatching 3 weeks later. Says IGR - insect growth regulator. You don't need this.

Read the directions carefully.

If you only want to kill the fruit files, you can probably cut down slightly (say 75*%) of the number of cans recommended and save a few bucks. If, on the other hand, you want to kill all the fruit flies, spiders, cockroaches, and mice in the house, use as directed and make sure you open all cabinet doors and drawers.

They'll knock them out for about 3 weeks and, since it gets rid of all the bugs, it is kinda nice...

I have a theory that they enter as "no-seems" through the screen. I didn't have any when it was hot and I had the A/C on.
Only a couple of months ago - when it started getting milder and I started using screened windows - did they appear.

Sprays:
They sell one at Walmart that's called a Kitchen bug killer (light blue can) that uses natural botanical ingredients and is safe for kitchens and food preparation areas.

Use that one in the kitchen. Buy a cheaper can of fly spray for the rest (Actually the kitchen stuff works pretty well, so you can get an extra can - whatever) - but I find that the can is never around when I see the gnats...

Spraying:
If you have a target near, medium, and far - go for the far one, aim high, and move towards it for the kill (an extra spray).
The near and medium ones will move away from you and into the spray.

Habits/Strategies:
They are slightly draw to light.
Leaving only one on for a little while is a good way to get them in one place. Flypaper hung from a light that you can leave on at night also works. They also prefer white or light walls and a certain lighting level. They'll move to different spots during the day to the lighting level they prefer. Figure out when and where.

Bait:
They are alcoholics.

Beer:
They'll head for a can of beer every time. To increase the area (only so many can gather around the can) and conserve your bait, pour some beer onto paper plates and/or paper towels, give them a while to show up.
You can then spray them on the plate, toss it out, and reload.

Scotch:
They say it's an acquired taste. I don't know where the acquired it from, but they love scotch.
Same basic strategy as beer, although, I like to run it through my mouth first and make sure it's really scotch.
They REALLY like it so you can dilute it with water or club soda, or serve it on the rocks. If you don't dilute it too much and they don't show up, at least it wasn't a total waste...

Stinky cheese.
Limburger - or whatever smells nasty. That's a pretty good draw also.

I suppose you could try slices of fruit if you think they're fruit flies.
Dice it, chop it, rub it on a paper plate. Maximum coverage at minimum cost.

Put some beer in some tins(like pot pie tins) and place them around the problem areas. Believe it or not, the fruit flies are drawn to the beer. You could also mush an apple and divide it up into tins. Place plastic over the tins and put small holes going into the plastic. The flies can get in but not back out. Good luck.
