Yahoo Search has lots to say on the subject.
Manifest Destiny: With the exception of slavery and the sadly still-breathing belief in white supremacy, no institution or philosophy caused as much human suffering in America as did Manifest Destiny. It is basically a belief that America and Americans have a God given right to expropreate land and resources all the way to the Pacific Ocean.
The notion that the United States was entitled to expand westward -- over the dead bodies and broken spirits of the West's original inhabitants -- created the nation we know today and left a trail of tragedy.

Elbow room, elbow room, gotta gotta get us some elbow room...

Manifest destinity is the idea that the United States was meant to fill the contitnent from the Atlantic to the pacific. The Lousiana purchase, Lois and Clark's expidition, the California Gold rush, the Spanish-American War, and the transcontinential railroad wer all events that helped make the idea a reality.

Ronald Regan took the idea to a modern idealism saying something about God intending our country to be here on this land "between two oceans" or something like that.

A short answer is that politicians promoted the idea that God wants Americans to grab up land, regardless of who (Indians) get in their way.
